Rhizome is dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology. We support artists working at the furthest reaches of technological experimentation, as well as those responding to the broader aesthetic and political implications of new tools and media.

City of QR Codes

I examine bar codes, wondering what it would be like to have only laser sight. I stare at handwriting until the loops and whorls stop being words, syllables, and even letters, and become no more than manic pulses brain wave transformed into muscle twitch, traced in the seismograph of our ink-hemorrhaging prosthetic appendages. I gaze at my city streets, running my eyes over the scars on its knees, feeling a refracted rainbow of urban skin interring a personal history of human frailty. I have a polymorphously perverted sense of physical praxis with objects. It’s not that I’m more object-curious or infrastructurally dirty-minded than most; it’s just that once you start to think about what things are wearing underneath their exterior semiotic reality, it’s pretty hard to calm down. Thankfully, the city invites my oddly tactile greeting, smiling and warming to my touch. Scars are so much sexier than tattoos…

Before and After UbuWeb: A conversation about artists’ film and video distribution

image

Beginning in 2009, artist Jason Simon worked with media scholar Cynthia Chris to investigate various distribution channels for artists’ films and videos. This collaborative research has fed into Simon’s own work, which draws on curatorial, documentary, and installation practices to reflect on the same issues of moving image circulation. In this interview, curator and writer Jacob King discussed this research with Simon in relation to his recent solo exhibition at Callicoon Fine Arts in New York (Nov 10 - Dec 22, 2013).

I (No Longer) Have a Web Site: Access, Authenticity, and the Restoration of GeoCities

It may seem strange to say this about the likes of “Cute Boy Site” or “Divorced Dads Page,” but the remains of the GeoCities web hosting service are a vital part of our cultural legacy. In its dial-up heyday, GeoCities was where non-specialist internet users made their first-ever webpages. Today, it exists as a vast, if partial, repository of the anxieties, hopes, and dreams of those creators, and offers a snapshot of the early popular usage of a now-ubiquitous cultural form, the webpage.

On Affectionate Sabotage and Exemplary Suffering: An Audio Guide to Isa Genzken

image

Two writers currently participating in the Whitney Independent Study Program,Tyler Coburn and Hannah Black, walk through the Isa Genzken: Retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art with Rhizome’s Community Manager Zachary Kaplan. In particular, we asked them to keep in mind Rhizome’s ongoing discussion of postinternet art (artworks in diverse media, particularly collage and assemblage, that can be seen as responses to a ubiquitous network culture). Their conversation worked both within and against this frame.

Feb 22: This is the ENDD, a Forum on the E-Cigarette

NJOYs. Blus. Smokefrees. V2s. All manner of customized vaporizers. This is the moment of the e-cigarette, or more precisely, the Electronic Nicotine Delivery Device (ENDD). Day by day, the broader public is learning (and contesting) what it means to “vape”: how one does it, where one can do it, and what it means to do so. Rhizome has commissioned a group of artists and critics to present analyses of this technology and the discursive field that is emerging around it….
